It is less than two months since we opened up in a little row of shops in Grange Over Sands.
We absolutely love this delightful Victorian seaside town and we were excited to set up here and become a part of the community.
In keeping with the Victorian tradition we wasted no time planting the flower bed which runs along the front of the building.
But our high, if naive, hopes for a colour scheme were dampened. There was only a limited choice of flowering plants on offer. The whole of the South Lakes, it seemed, had shopped just before us. Nonetheless, we bought and planted out what we could.
So we were surprised as well as delighted to receive the Silver Gilt award from the Grange in Bloom judges at the Grange over Sands Civic Society.
Firstly, the residents, businesses and shops in Grange over Sands are famous for their fabulous flower displays. The whole town seems to play its part, filling the entire area with colour all summer long.
And secondly, with us expecting to have to fill in an application form, we didn’t even realise we had entered!
Our little mostly-end-of-range flower displays had done us proud! Of course now we wish we had put far more effort into coordinating the display. The power of hindsight is mighty!
So all we can say is, just wait until next year. If that lot can get us a silver, we’ll be going all out to bring home the top accolade.
We probably will still be better plumbers and bathroom installers than gardeners. But we know our ericaceous from our alkaline, our climbers from our creepers and our annuals from our perennials. Or at least we like to think we do!
Look out 2020, let’s turn those green fingers into gold!
